1. Don't be afraid to "read the directions". You will often learn something. 2. Read trade magazines; even the engineering stuff above your pay grade. If you have questions, e-mail the author. I made some great contacts as engineers LOVE a plumber who wants to learn. (Plumbing engineer) 3. CALL THE REP. This is crucial. I can recognize and repair almost every backflow preventer on the market. I learned more from the factory reps, than any Master Plumber or backflow class. 4. Admit you made a mistake... fast! The faster you admit it, the faster you can turn a bad situation into a learning opportunity. 5. Make friends with inspectors by asking them questions. Once an inspector sees that you want to do it right, they will give you a lot more respect. (I know most inspectors within 100 miles by first name. More importantly: they know me and my work!) 6. Your job for every issue is to find a solution that will (1) function...perfectly; (2) meets the code; (3) is installed with good workmanship and (4) satisfies the needs of customer. Lastly: Don't complain when the job goes to hell. This is plumbing and most jobs will, at some point, go to hell. SLOW DOWN, breath, and THINK. Your brain is way more powerful than your hands.
